RIP Venus Flytrap.
However! I am done exams. Done first year, done..... donedonedone. Hah! I'm happy.
But sad. Everyone's moving out. It's like... camp is over :-(. And some people will come back to camp next summer, but some people won't. And we'll all miss each other in between.
I start work tomorrrrrowwww. Bah. Too soon! Too soon!
My Venus Flytrap is dying. I don't know exactly what happened, but in one day, all of its mature traps died. It started putting up a new one, but then it just stopped growing and began to brown. I checked the bulb - I may be imagining it, but I think it's darkening too. Siiiigh. And I just thought it was starting to do well...
I guess it lasted a good 4 months, and they're notoriously hard to grow. For such a tiny damn plant... I'm not yet giving up on this one, but I may start looking for a new one. My third one. Do you know what happened to the first? I LOST IT. I lost a plant. It happened when I moved out of res for winter break. Somewhere in all the packing up it vanished - when I got home and noticed it missing I assumed I left it, but then I went back to my dorm to check and it wasn't there either. I have no clue what happened to it. Maybe it ran away?
The point is, going into Botany is looking increasingly questionable. I've had 4 plants this year - lost one, froze another, and seem to be killing a third.
On a positive note, my jade plant looks dandy! For now.
Also positive note: 4/5 exams complete. 4 days to freedom. And by freedom I mean starting work the next day.
There are greenhouses on top of the Biology building, and every time I see my grandmother she asks if I've "gotten up there" yet. And then last week I saw a poster for the Cell and Systems Biology Union giving a tour! So naturally I hit that up. And it was pretty damn awesome. I'm obviously a little green-starved, since a) this has been the longest winter in several years, and b) I'm now in the city, so it was good to be around plants. Especially plant-smell. Even algae. I miss chlorophyll.... And there were flowers, and fruits (kumquat), and the greenhouses even had lizards, birds, turtles, and fish. And the guys who showed us around talked about soil and pots and a whole bunch of horticultural stuff, so it was quite educational. And it was waaarm. Oh they had a desert house, and I do so love xerophytes!
Oh and it was funny - I think there must be some rule that people who work in the Botany department must wear at least one item of green clothing at all times, because they were. And I'm not talking some sort of uniform. I mean all sorts of green shirts, sweaters, sweatpants, cords, skirts. Didn't get any confirmation, but I'll bet there was some green skivvies action going on.
My jade plant is still doing well. And! I took my Flytrap out of hibernation and it's already put up two new traps. It grows really fast, although not very big. Now I just need some flies... I'm hesitant to fertilize it myself.
I love how the grass is already green outside - as soon as the snow melts off it, the lawns look springy. The city is waking up fast. Been waiting so long, I guess.
And of course to enjoy this day of nature, I will be spending the remainder of it locked in our giant concrete library.
The St Patrick's Day parade is going past my window. Except we're not on their route - they're on their way to the route. So they're just sort of... walking past. Not parading. But at least I'm getting to see it, because I'm not going to otherwise.
It seems weird that we have this Irish holiday. Do we even have that many Irish people? Okay yeah according to Wikipedia we really do. 15.6% of Ontario. Bizarre.
So my grandmother gave me a jade plant. That means that my room is home to the following macroorganisms:
- Homo sapiens sapiens
- Dionaea muscipula
- Crassula ovata
- Kalanchoe sp.
- and sometimes, Mus musculus
It is warm out lately.
Oh and Friday night I saw "Me and You and Everyone We Know", which was amazing. Well-scored. Themes include fantasy and reaching out to strangers.
